P.J. George August 15, 1925 - December 1, 2009
This evening, my dear Uncle, P.J. George (lovingly known as O'Gee), passed away. He is the first of my Dad's generation to pass on.
My Dad's second eldest brother was a star football (that's American Soccer) player and a terrific swimmer in his hey-day. His athletic feats were legendary. He was also a good caroms and cheeta-kalli (card) player. (He apparently taught my Dad everything he knew.) Among the brothers, he was known as The Fair, Wise Mediator. Perhaps not a very creative name, but it described him succinctly. Whenever there was a dispute, O'Gee Uncle was brought in to make the decision. He and Vee Aunty passed on many of these traits to their three beautiful, vivacious daughters.
O'Gee Uncle introduced me to the cashew nut. On my first visit to India in 1988, I remember him showing me a cashew nut in it's shell. And then coaxing me to eat the funny looking nut. From that point, I was hooked. During that visit, anytime I was at O'Gee Uncle's house, I would sneak into the kitchen closet looking for cashews. To this day, I think of O'Gee Uncle when I eat cashew nuts. Ironically, I have about 5 pounds of cashews sitting in a jar on my kitchen counter at this moment. As a side note, it was during this trip at his house that my cousins taught me this song.
I took the above picture in January, 2005. I'm told this was his favorite place to sit in the house. In my memory, even from my first visit, I remember him sitting there in that exact position.
The picture below was how I last saw him in May 2008. He's standing at the pathway to his house with Vee Aunty. I took this as I was getting into the rickshaw to leave.

My dearest O'GeeUnca. You will be missed.
Current mood: sad. Current music: Zelda the Zebra.
